Julius Caesar de Miranda (born April 3, 1906 in Paramaribo , Suriname , † November 28, 1956 ibid) was a Surinamese lawyer and politician .

Life

De Miranda was the descendant of a long-established Surinamese planter family. He attended high school in The Hague , Netherlands , and then studied law at the University of Amsterdam . On December 20, 1928, he made his state examination ( de graad van meester ).

Lawyer

After his return he worked as a lawyer in Paramaribo from 1929 to 1946 . In 1946 he traveled again to the Netherlands and received his doctorate in law on December 18, 1946 at the University of Amsterdam . In the same year he was appointed to the Paramaribo Court of Justice and was also its President for a short time in the year of his death.

politics

De Miranda was a member of the Colonial States (parliament with limited powers) from 1932 to 1938 and from 1942 to 1946 . He was also Minister of Justice and Police, and Minister of Education and Finance. He was also Prime Minister from 1949 to 1950.

As a member of parliament, he offered open criticism of the administration of governor Kielstra (1933 to 1944) and vigorously advocated a change in powers. According to his ideas, the governor should no longer report to the Dutch minister for overseas territories, but should be responsible to the Surinamese community with his administration.

Julius Caesar de Miranda was not only a Surinamese politician from the very beginning, but also an authoritative lawyer who contributed a great deal to legal science in Suriname.

On November 28, 1961, a statue created by Leo Braat was unveiled by his widow. The statue shows him in robe and is on Mr. de Mirandastraat in the center of Paramaribo.
