Hans Christopher Müller (born September 2, 1818 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † December 25, 1897 ibid) was a Faroese politician and official.

Origin and family

Hans Christopher was the son of Sigga Joensdatter and Sýslumaður Rasmus Müller from Tórshavn. He was married to Marin Kristina, née Olsen from Tórshavn. Their son Sørin Emil Müller (1856–1922) was later mayor of Tórshavn.

Professional career

Hans Christopher Müller between 1850 and 1860.

Island Police

In 1839 he became sýslufultrúi ( Syssel authorized representative) at the side of his father and in 1843 took over the position of Sýslumaður (police chief) of the island of Streymoy from his father . He stayed that way for almost half a century until he retired in 1892 for reasons of age.

MP

From the beginning, Müller was a member of the Faroese Løgting, which was re-established in 1852 mainly at the instigation of Niels Winther . With interruptions he was active there for a period of forty years (from 1852 to 1855, from 1857 to 1859, from 1865 to 1881 and from 1885 to 1892). In addition, he was from 1858 to 1864 and from 1887 to 1890 member of the Danish Folketing and in the meantime from 1865 to 1886 member of the then Landsting (upper house).

Shipping company and postal agency

HC Müller as the first post office clerk in the Faroe Islands together with Maria Mikkelsen.

From 1866 Müller was a representative of the Danish shipping company DFDS in the Faroe Islands.

When the first Faroese post office opened in his house on Tinganes on March 1, 1870 , he was its manager until his death. He is thus considered the forefather of Postverk Føroya . His house, the so-called Müllerhúsið in the alley Gongin , was the original Løgtingshaus in its northern part until he bought it in 1862 and converted it into a residential building together with the neighboring house.

Others

In the authentic travel report Journey with the yacht Maria 1854 to the Faroe Islands (published in England in 1855) he plays a central role as the host and tour guide of the two authors. So we learn there that he spoke fluent English and was the only Faroese who visited the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 . He also spoke German and French.
