Julius Niepraschk (* 1825 in Berlin ; † October 14, 1890 in Cologne ) was a German garden architect and garden director of the Cologne Flora .

Life

Julius Niepraschk was born as the son of the head gardener of the Pfaueninsel in Berlin. He graduated from the gardening college in Potsdam; his apprenticeship and traveling years led him to England and France. He planned a large number of gardens and parks for the Baumann tree nursery in southern Alsace. He was considered a pupil of the Prussian horticultural director Peter Joseph Lenné , who suggested him in 1862 as head gardener for the Cologne Flora that he was planning. Niepraschk followed the call to Cologne and directed the construction work for the park, which opened in 1864. As a result, he was appointed to the board of Flora AG and appointed garden director. In its heyday he directed the Flora for a total of 28 years until his death in 1890.

When realizing the flora, Niepraschk stuck to the overall plan developed by Lenné. However, he refrained from creating the plane tree grove, which was supposed to be reminiscent of Roman antiquity.

Commemoration

After Niepraschk's death, students and friends donated a basalt memorial stone, which was placed in the flora with a bronze relief.
