Julmust

Julmust is a lemonade drink that is mainly sold in Sweden . It is similar to the malt beer known in Germany and contains 30 other ingredients in addition to hops and malt . As Julmust (from Swedish : jul - Christmas) it is offered at the end of the year. During Easter it is called Påskmust (from Swedish: påsk - Easter) and the rest of the time it is must .

The drink was created at the beginning of the 20th century at the height of the Swedish abstinence movement : The Swede Robert Roberts and his son Harry Roberts, who studied chemistry in Germany at the suggestion of his father, are looking for alternatives to beer and brandy. Harry Roberts collected a wide variety of recipes and developed them further into his own production. In 1910, Must began to be manufactured in Sweden by the newly founded Roberts AB in Örebro. The initially sluggish sales skyrocketed with the creation of the state alcohol monopoly in 1922.

The recipe is a secret and only three people reportedly know the exact ingredients. In addition to secret ingredients, Julmust contains malt and hops (now in extracts); there are about thirty ingredients in total.

There are several manufacturers of this drink. Even Coca-Cola started producing its own Julmust in 2004 in response to lower sales of other sodas in Sweden around Christmas time.
