Christmas hut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christmas hut ( Swedish : Julstuga , Norwegian and Danish : Julestue ) was the place in the Scandinavian countries and Germany where the common people enjoyed themselves at Christmas time . There the time was spent with dancing, singing, mimic play, joke songs or with poetry on a familiar topic. Sometimes the jokes were about a person present.

The poet Ludvig Holberg described in his comedy Julestuen what it was like at such a festival. Since there had been riots several times, the celebrations were later banned. In Denmark this happened as early as 1735 through a decree of King Christian VI.
