Hermann Hendrichs (born October 17, 1809 in Cologne , † November 1, 1871 ) was a German actor.

Life

Hendrichs came from a long-established family; his father was an official of the Thurn-und-Taxis-Post in the Cologne branch. During his commercial training in Frankfurt am Main , he discovered the theater for himself. He broke off his training and joined a theater company. At the same time, he took lessons from the actress Elise Bürger and appeared in smaller roles. On the occasion of such an appearance, the artistic director Karl Theodor von Küstner got to know him and brought him to Darmstadt . In the spring of 1831 Hendrichs was able to shine there at the court theater in the role of "Kosinsky".

In the same year Hendrichs came to the Stadttheater in Frankfurt / M. engaged as a lover and remained under contract there until 1834. He then performed in Hanover until 1837 . A follow-up contract brought him to the Stadttheater in Hamburg for almost five years . When Küstner was appointed general manager of the royal theaters in Berlin in 1842 , he tried a. a. also to bring Hendrichs to him. After a very successful guest performance, Hendrichs was finally hired for the Berlin court theater on June 24, 1844. His first role there was "Rolla".

Hendrichs remained a member of the Berliner Ensemble until his farewell performance on June 18, 1864. He then went on a number of guest tours that took him to Moscow and New York , all of which were successful. His highly acclaimed contribution to the Munich model presentations should also be mentioned. Between the individual trips he appeared sporadically (mostly in winter) in the Berlin Victoria Theater .

When cultural life began to flourish again after the Franco-Prussian War , Hendrichs took over the management of the Victoria Theater in October 1871. There he was on stage for the last time on October 21st as "Don Ramiro". Hendrichs died of smallpox on November 1, 1871, two weeks after his 61st birthday . The funeral took place with great sympathy from colleagues and the population in the Catholic St. Hedwig cemetery on Berlin's Liesenstrasse . Since Hendrichs, allegedly in order to avoid contagion of others, had refrained from receiving the sacraments, he was refused the ecclesiastical blessing and the burial took place without mass and clergy. Hendrich's tomb has not been preserved.

reception

Hendrichs was a hero and lover of heroes in earlier years, whom no one apart from Emil Devrient could stand by his side. Formerly the best interpreter of Birch-Pfeifferscher lover, he later portrayed a strong and coarse nature, a chivalrous masculinity best.

"The last great romantic on the German stage"

“Over all his representations there was a magic of plastic beauty, a touch of romantic poetry, which in particular did not point out sharp characters, not tasks that a deeply ingenious mind could accomplish, but rather more lyrical reproaches, ideal figures that speak to the heart in beautiful form. In such, he exercised irresistible violence, whether it be tragically shaken or amused with graceful humor "
