Gustav Emil Devrient (born September 4, 1803 in Berlin , † August 7, 1872 in Dresden ) was a German actor.

Life

Devrient first entered the chemical factory of an uncle in Zwickau as an apprentice, but soon turned to the theater like his brothers Eduard Devrient and Karl August Devrient and made his debut in Braunschweig in 1821 as Raoul in the Maid of Orleans .

Only after he found an engagement in Leipzig in 1823 did he devote himself exclusively to acting. In 1828 he moved to Magdeburg, from where he followed a call to Hamburg in 1829. Here he completed his dramatic education and found a permanent position in Dresden at the Hofbühne in 1831, from which he resigned on May 1, 1868 after 37 years of activity, in order, in his own words, to “not have to survive as an artist” .

Appointed an extraordinary honorary member, he was the first actor to receive the Knight's Cross of the Saxon Order of Civil Merit and was appointed Councilor . He was also the bearer of the Iffland Ring .

He was married to Doris , née Böhler (1804-1882) who was also an actress. The marriage ended in divorce in 1842.

The actor rests today in the Old Annenfriedhof in Dresden's Südvorstadt; his grave has not been preserved.

Honors

Devrientstrasse in Dresden was named in honor of Devrient.

As an honorary member, the members of the court theater dedicated a bronze medal to him on the occasion of the termination of his stage activities in May 1868. It was created by the Austrian medalist Heinrich Jauner (1833–1912):
