July Morning is a tradition in Bulgaria ( Bulgarian : Джулая or Джулай ) that is a holdover from the hippie era of the 1970s . Visitors often hitchhike to the Black Sea coast on the night of June 30th to see the sunrise on the morning of July 1st. Traditionally, the song July Morning from the album Look at Yourself by the British hard rock band Uriah Heep is played and sung along by the visitors.

Although the hippie movement in general and this custom originated in the USA, the tradition was very well received in Bulgaria and continues to this day with great popularity. Officially, the event has only been held since 1992, two years after the end of socialism in Eastern Europe and Russia. In the following years the custom spread to many places on the east coast of Bulgaria.
