Dorothy Stuart Russell (born June 27, 1895 in Sydney , † October 19, 1983 in Dorking ) was a British pathologist and neuropathologist .

Life

Born in Sydney, Russell grew up in England and attended school in Cambridge . In 1919 she began studying medicine at London Hospital Medical College . After completing her studies, she became an assistant doctor at the London Hospital under the pathologist Hubert Maitland Turnbull , where she devoted herself to the systematic investigation of kidney diseases and obtained her doctorate.

Her interest in neuropathology was aroused during two research stays in Boston (with the pathologist Frank Burr Mallory ) and Montreal (with the neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield ). In 1930 she returned to London Hospital , where she established neuropathology. After a period in Oxford , where she succeeded Pío del Río Hortega at Radcliffe Infirmary in 1940 , she returned to London in 1944 and took over the management of the Bernard Baron Institute of Pathology in 1946 . Russell was the first woman ever to achieve a management position in pathology.

A research focus of Russell was the study of brain tumors . Among other things, she distinguished the primary lymphomas of the brain from the group of malignant gliomas and researched the spread ( metastasis ) of tumor cells along the fluid spaces of the brain . Her textbook Pathology of tumors of the nervous system , written together with Lucien J. Rubinstein (1924–1990), has remained a standard work in neuropathology.

Appreciations

In addition to numerous research awards, Russell has received honorary doctorates from the University of Glasgow and McGill University .
