The Juniper Beach Provincial Park is a 248  hectare (ha) large Provincial Park in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The park is about 20 kilometers west of Cache Creek on Highway 1 , which is the southern route of the Trans-Canada Highway here . The park is located in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District . The climate in the area is semi-arid , meaning that it is hot and dry. The flora and fauna correspond to the climate. The area is dominated by dry grass and cacti ( opuntia ) and the Pacific rattlesnake .

The small park, located on the Interior Plateau , is mostly located between the Thompson River in the south and Highway 1 in the north. In addition to the highway, a Canadian National Railway also runs through the park. It also largely encloses a First Nations reserve .
The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area .

history

The park was established in 1989 and had a size of 260 hectares when it was established. With a change in the law and a new demarcation in 2010, the park was reduced to its current size of 248 hectares.

As with almost all provincial parks in British Columbia, this one too - long before the area was settled by immigrants or became part of a park - was the settlement area of ​​various First Nations tribes, here the Nlaka'pamux or the Secwepemc . Of these there are also so-called “kikuli”, a kind of pit house , in the park.
