Jurassic Cantonal Library

The Jurassic Cantonal Library was founded on July 13, 1982 by an ordinance of the government of the Canton of Jura . The library is located in the Hôtel des Halles in Porrentruy . It is at the same time an educational and study library and a repository of the Jura cultural heritage.

chronology

1988: The Ordinance of October 27, 1987 on Libraries and the Dissemination of Reading comes into force. The JKB is given the task of actively shaping the cantonal library network. 1989: Beginning with the computerization of the library catalog, which is part of a network with the other official institutions. 1994: Restoration of the Hôtel des Halles . The library is temporarily moving to the Hôtel de Gléresse . 1997: Reinstallation of the library in the Hôtel des Halles between April and May after completion of the renovation work. 2002: On December 17th, the Jura government decided to integrate the Jura Cantonal Library together with the Neuchâtel library network , which was expanded to include the Jura region, in the network of libraries in western Switzerland (RERO).

Inventory and use

The library is open to everyone and makes its entire collection available to users, unless otherwise stipulated in the regulations. The collection consists of 120,000 volumes (as of 2005): its focus is on history and archeology, but also on everything related to the canton of Jura and its inhabitants. The JKB also has valuable old holdings (Catholic theology, history, literature, science, incunabula , manuscripts ) which can only be viewed on request. This collection forms a separate department and is located in the Hôtel de Gléresse . It collects all works from the former Jesuit school of Pruntrut and its successor institutions (up to the middle of the 20th century), as well as other collections of various origins.

Catalog

The Jurassic Cantonal Library is part of the Association of Libraries in Western Switzerland (RERO), which maintains an online catalog. The old holdings from 1938 to 1991 and the Jura bibliography are recorded in a card catalog.
