Yuri Alexandrowitsch Petrov ( Russian Юрий Александрович Петров ; born June 10, 1955 in Sagorsk ) is a Russian historian and director of the Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow .

Life

In 1978 Petrov graduated from Lomonosov State University in Moscow with a degree in history . He then worked as the head of the exhibition department at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. Since 1985 he has been researching the center of 19th century Russian history at the Institute for the History of the Soviet Union , now the Institute for Russian History. Yuri Petrov has been the director of this institute since 2010. Petrov received his PhD in 1986 on The Role of Moscow Stock Trading Banks in the Formation of Financial Capital in Russia . In 1999 he received his habilitation on the topic of Moscow's Bourgeoisie in the Early 20th Century: Entrepreneurship and Politics .

From 1990 to 2003 Petrov was the head of the Department of New History at the magazine "Otečestvennaja istorija", today "Russian History". From 1995 he was a member of the editorial board of this magazine. He then headed the history department in the External and Public Relations Department of Bank Rossii (Central Bank) until 2010 .

Since 2013, Petrov has been the chairman of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the History of Social Reforms, Popular Movements and Revolutions.

Petrow is the author of 12 monographs and more than 150 scientific articles and essays that have been published in various languages.
