Jurists' ball polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Juristenball Polka is a quick polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 280). The work was performed for the first time on January 18, 1864 in the Sofienbad Hall in Vienna.

Remarks

The Schnellpolka was written for Mardi Gras in 1864. There were two lawyers' balls that year because the organizers couldn't agree on a joint ball. The Juristenball Polka was presented at the first event. For the second ball, Strauss wrote the Patronessen-Polka op. 286. The first performance of the Juristenball-Polka on January 18 was conducted by Josef Strauss , because his older brother Johann was probably for health reasons for the ball of the industrial societies the following day had to spare. From the beginning, the work was overshadowed by more successful compositions by Strauss. It was later somewhat forgotten and rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 2 minutes and 56 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
