Justin Hinds (born May 7, 1942 in Steertown , Saint Ann Parish , Jamaica ; † March 16, 2005 ), also known as Justin Hines , is one of the most important and successful singers on the Jamaican music scene during the 1960s and 1970s, the period when when the ska arises and turns into rocksteady and later reggae .

He was born in the parish of Saint Ann, the same area where Bob Marley was born. He celebrates his greatest successes with his background vocal troupe The Dominoes consisting of Dennis Sinclair and Junior Dixon. Their first single 'Carry Go Bring Come' from 1963 is said to stay at number 1 on the Jamaican single charts for 8 weeks. Other hits from the Ska era are: 'King Samuel', 'Botheration', 'Jump Out Of The Frying Pan' (all 1964), 'The Ark', 'Peace And Love' and 'Rub Up Push Up' (all 1965). The transition to rock steady in 1966-67 brought hits like 'The Higher The Monkey Climbs',' No Good Rudy ', On A Saturday Night', 'Once A Man' and (in 1968) 'Here I Stand' 'and' Save A Bread '. Recordings of early reggae include: 'You Should Have Known Better', 'Cock Mouth Kill Cock' and 'If It's Love You Need'.

In 1975 Duke Reid , the producer with whom Hinds made all his previous recordings, dies . In 1976 he released his first long-playing record 'Jezebel' with the producer Jack Ruby on the Iceland label. In addition to the great 'Fire', the album contains the song 'Natty Take Over', which should be part of the soundtrack of 'Rockers'. After 'Just In Time' (1978) a second album for Ruby, Hinds joins producer Sonia Pottinger . The result is a number of singles including 'Wipe Your Weeping Eyes'. In 1984 his perhaps best album to date, 'Travel with Love', was released. Here he is accompanied by the rhythm section of Bob Marley, who died a few years earlier. The prospect of a possibly longer collaboration was thwarted by the murder of the drummer Carlton Barrett shortly after the record was finished. 'Know Jah Better' was released in 1992, then it fell silent for a few years around Justin Hinds. In the new millennium he is back with two live albums' Prophecy Live and 'Let's Rock'.

As a songwriter and singer, Hinds is on a par with Bob Marley, who is much better known outside of Jamaica. He is characterized by simple, catchy melodies. His texts mostly have a religious background and draw from the rich Jamaican tradition of proverbs and sayings. They unfold their effect not least through Hinds' clear and yet expressive voice.

Justin Hinds died of lung cancer on March 16, 2005 at the age of 62.
