Prison in Leipzig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leipzig correctional facility was an institution in the southern suburb of Leipzig . It was created with the Royal Saxon Regional Court in Bernhard-Göring-Straße (formerly Elisenstraße), which was built from 1902 to 1906, which was used as the office building of the construction and assembly combine during the GDR era and has served as the Leipzig District Court since 1999 . The cell wing, built as a remand prison, was located in the courtyard and had its entrance at Alfred-Kästner-Strasse 47. It also served as a penal institution during the GDR era. About 500 prisoners could be accommodated.

Since 2001, the Leipzig correctional facility with hospital has been located in the former prison hospital in the Meusdorf district, which was expanded by new buildings . The cell block on Alfred-Kästner-Strasse was torn down.

In addition to the correctional facility on Alfred-Kästner-Strasse, the central execution site of the GDR had been located on the grounds of the Leipzig District Court since 1960 . It was spatially separated from the penal institution and had a camouflaged entrance at Arndtstrasse 48. Its existence was kept secret. By 1981 at least 64 people were executed here by guillotine or shot in the neck . The rooms have been preserved as a memorial and should be regularly made accessible to interested parties.
