history

The founding of the Kärntner Heimatdienst (KHD) goes back to the internal and external unrest after the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (1918).

First World War

After the First World War , the situation in Carinthia was unresolved due to the two language groups, German and Slovene speakers. On November 5, 1918, troops of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia invaded southern Carinthia and occupied the area. This happened after Carinthia's declaration of accession to the Republic of German Austria . After the invasion and occupation of areas of Carinthia, the " defensive struggle " developed against foreign rule. On January 19, 1919, an armistice was signed, as a result of which it was stipulated in the Treaty of Saint-Germain that a referendum should be carried out in southern Carinthia on membership of Austria or the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

On the basis of the Treaty of Saint-Germain, the Carinthian Homeland Service worked in 1920 for Carinthia to remain in association with Austria . Former defenders played a leading role in the Carinthian homeland service.

The referendum set out in the Treaty of Saint-Germain was held on October 10, 1920 . Those in favor of belonging to Austria achieved a share of the vote of almost 60%. Zone A (the part of Carinthia that was militarily occupied by the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) thus remained in association with Austria. If the result was different, a referendum should have been held for Zone B (including the state capital Klagenfurt). This result was achieved through the efforts of thousands of volunteer activists from the Carinthian Homeland Service.

"The work of the Carinthian Homeland Service was essential for Austria's victory in the referendum."

National Socialism

In 1924 the Carinthian Heimatdienst was renamed “Kärntner Heimatbund”. In the following years it developed more and more into a platform for the National Socialists in Austria. After the NSDAP was banned in Austria , all Nazi activities within the Carinthian Heimatbund, which had meanwhile been massively infiltrated by the NSDAP, continued largely undisturbed.

Start-up

In 1957 an association Kärntner Heimatdienst (KHD) was founded by its own admission in direct relation to the "historical" Kärntner Heimatdienst (KHD) .
