The Köln was a frigate of the German Navy and type ship of the class F120 , also Köln -class. She was the fourth ship named Köln ( Cöln ) in a German Navy. Predecessors in the name were two small cruisers of the Imperial Navy from 1909 and 1916 and the light cruiser Cologne of the Imperial and later Navy.

history

The Köln was laid down on December 21, 1957 at the HC Stülcken Sohn shipyard in Hamburg-Steinwerder , and was launched on December 6, 1958. On April 15, 1961, the ship was put into service by the German Navy . It was assigned to the 2nd escort squadron, later the 2nd frigate squadron in Wilhelmshaven.

After 21 years of service, the frigate was decommissioned on December 17, 1982 in Wilhelmshaven, where it was initially used as a spare parts store.

Since November 1989 it has been used as a training hulk "ex Cologne" at the Operations Training Center Damage Defense Marine (EAZS) in Neustadt . There crews of the maritime units are trained in fire fighting and leak prevention.
