The strong-growing, bushy rose 'Kölner Karneval' forms a small, compact shrub. The rose plant is about 75 to 90 cm high and 60 cm wide. The lilac to lavender-colored, often silvery, shimmering flowers, which are arranged individually, sometimes in clusters, are formed from around 40 curved, short petals that can take on a light blue tinge in sunny weather. In the later flowering stage, the petals bend slightly outwards and form a cup-shaped flower. The rose 'Kölner Karneval' has shiny, dark green, leathery leaves. The flowers are characterized by a light, fruity scent. The origin of the rose is not known. The rose is suitable for planting low flower borders in gardens and is used as a cut flower .

The remontant rose is only moderately hardy ( USDA climate zone 7b and warmer) and resistant to the known rose diseases . Occasionally, however, the rose variety is susceptible to star soot .

The 'Cologne Carnival' rose variety with its extraordinary color is used in numerous rosaries and gardens around the world, including the Bush's Pasture Garden, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Carla Fineschi Foundation Rose Garden, the Cranford Rose Garden, and the International Rose Test Garden in Portland as well as in the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden and in the Europa-Rosarium Sangerhausen.

The rose 'Cologne Carnival' was awarded a gold medal at the Rome Rose Trials in 1964.
