After 1945, the barracks were used by the SAG Wismut mining technology center until 1949 .

From 1952 to 1991 the building belonged to the Freiberg Mining Academy as a dormitory , initially it housed employees of the university and later students again. At that time the building was named after the KPD politician Ernst Thälmann, who was murdered in 1944, as the Ernst-Thälmann-Heim . The living space was 4630 m² in 166 rooms, which were equipped with a total of 320 beds, plus office, hospital, canteen, sports changing rooms and lounges.

In 1991 the building became the responsibility of the Freiberg Student Union, was sold in 1996 and was vacant in the following years. In 2002, the new sports stadium of the University of Freiberg was inaugurated on the adjacent property, which used to be a riding hall and parade ground. In October 2009, the IF Group, as the new owner of the dormitory, placed the order for the fundamental renovation of the property; construction work began in early 2010 and was completed in October 2011 at the beginning of the winter semester.
