The King Sejong Station ( Korean : 세종 과학 기지, Sejong Gwahak Giji ; English: King Sejong Station ) is a South Korean research station in the Antarctic . It is located on King George Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands north of the Antarctic Peninsula . The station is named after King Sejong , who ruled over the Korean kingdom of Joseon from 1418 to 1450 .

The station was opened on February 17, 1988 and now consists of ten containers . It is operated all year round, with the crew size varying between 16 (winter) and 50 people (summer).

The Argentine Carlini station is only about 6 km away from the King Sejong station .
