location

The former school of Gerkerath is located at the entrance to the village on the edge of the village settlement in a still very rural environment. On the west, north and east sides, the school yard is framed by mighty plane trees . In the north-west there is a small structure under a hipped roof .

architecture

Eaves , two-storey brick building under a protruding hipped roof. The central risalit takes up the main entrance with a staircase flanked by strong stone cheeks. There are twin windows on the first floor above the main portal, which is profiled and heavily framed with brick ornamentation. The risalit is flanked on both sides by a five-part ribbon window on both floors.

The clear horizontal emphasis of the building is achieved by alternating plaster and brick-exposed strips. The base is plastered up to the window sill formed by a rolled brick layer , the windows on the ground floor sit in a brick-facing area, the parapet zone of the upper floor, which is also covered by rolled layers, is plastered again and the window zone on the upper floor is brick-transparent.

All windows sit in cubic plaster frames and have single-pane glazing with skylights . The jamb is again marked by a strip of plaster up to the eaves . The gable surfaces follow the horizontal structure described, but only have a twin window on each side on each floor. The back is made of bricks - without any dividing plaster strips. The stairwell protrudes clearly here. The edges of the structure are emphasized by pilaster strips . It is exposed to light on two sides through three very narrow arched windows extending over two floors with the preserved and molded wooden frames. The roof covering has double hollow tiles.

Inside there are two classrooms on each single-hip level , which are accessible through smooth, simple door leaves. Suspended modern ceilings characterize the classrooms. The lower wall surfaces - a little above the parapet height - of the corridors are tiled and end with a color-contrasting tiled strip. The tiled tape also encloses the class doors or serves as protection at the free corners of the room. The stairwell shows a representative staircase made of scratched artificial stone parapets with handrails on top . A wooden staircase with a round entry post, smooth balusters and handrail leads to the attic.

The school yard is bordered by a flat wall with a renewed grille. There are large plane trees in the schoolyard and, apart from the main building, a small toilet facility made of bricks under a hipped roof. In front of the building, two front gardens flank the central entrance. They are surrounded by flat brick walls with pillars on the sides and towards the sidewalk , which lead into the staircase of the main portal . To the east of the building, the driveway to the school yard is flanked by two brick pillars, each of which is provided with slender natural stone collision protection.

Historical data The building was built in 1929 as a school for Gerkerath. After the school was closed, the city's school psychological service was housed there until 2007. After that the building was empty.

The school building has been preserved in its original form, apart from minor changes.

The building, which was built as a school for Gerkerath and the surrounding villages, is a representative schoolhouse from the late 1920s with a good architectural quality.
