Imperial cities of Morocco
Location of the four royal cities in Morocco |
The four cities of Fez , Marrakech , Meknes and Rabat are called the royal cities of Morocco . Each of these was at some point in Morocco's history the capital of one of the country's great dynasties ( Idrisids , Almoravids , Almohads , Merinids , Saadians, and Alawids ). The respective rulers expanded their capital splendidly, which is why the royal cities are among the most important tourist attractions in Morocco today.
The four royal cities of Morocco with the ruling dynasties in chronological order are:
- Fès : capital of the Idrisids (807–926), Merinids (1248–1465) and Alawids (1666–1672 and 1727–1912)
- Marrakech : capital of the Almoravids (1070–1147), Almohads (1147–1269) and Saadians (1554–1659)
- Meknes : capital of the Alawids (1672–1727)
- Rabat : capital of the Alawids (since 1912)
