The king fir is a registered natural monument in the Schmalegger Tobel in Baden-Württemberg .

history

Until the 19th century, the Schmalegger Tobel had a primeval forest-like character. The silver fir was once part of a group of trees of similar size, which, however, fell victim to the increasing timber harvest in the early 20th century due to improved traffic routes. It was the last remaining evidence of this, deliberately left as a natural monument.

Status

Today the fir tree has a height of 34  m after hurricane Lothar broke off a 10 m long summit section on December 26, 1999. The diameter at chest height is 1.38 m.
