description
The Königstor is built in classic proportions .
It shows war trophies and Mars as an allegory of war and Hercules as an allegory for heroism. The initials of King Friedrich Wilhelm I can be seen in a cartouche with the Prussian eagle . The laurel wreath symbolizes triumph; the shield, the honor; the palm leaves, the virtues and olive leaves, peace.
Today there is a café in the gate .
history
In the Great Northern War , after the siege of Stettin in 1713 , in the Peace of Stockholm in 1720 , Friedrich Wilhelm I bought back parts of Western Pomerania , which had fallen to the Swedes at the end of the Thirty Years' War in the Peace of Westphalia , in a purchase agreement. As a reminder of the happy return of the Duchy of Stettin, he had the magnificent portal built during the renovation of the fortress at Anklamer Tor. The architect was the fortress builder Gerhard Cornelius von Walrave , the stone carvings were created by the sculptor Bartolomé Damart . When the fortress was razed in 1875, Hugo Lemcke campaigned for the preservation of the royal gate. After 1945 Szczecin became Polish. The Königstor has been kept in exemplary condition by Polish restorers to this day.
