Location and history

Königstraße is a main street in Bad Freienwalde. Königstrasse begins on Karl-Marx-Strasse and Uchtenhagenstrasse opposite the town hall. It runs in a south-east direction to Albert-Schweitzer-Platz, where it crosses under Berliner Straße as Bundesstraße 158 . The street then continues as Wriezener Straße . The following streets start from Königstraße: Grünstraße, Neue Bergstraße , Hauptstraße, Fischerstraße / Tornower Straße on the left and Mittelstraße, Georgenkirchstraße, Rathenaustraße, Gesundbrunnenstraße , Mühlengasse and Gartenstraße seen from the beginning on the right.

Königstraße is one of the first streets in Bad Freienwalde. In 1622 the street was extended to about Rathenaustraße. At the time, the Berlin Gate, which was demolished in 1801, was also located here. Rathenaustraße was the beginning of the country road towards Berlin . In the 18th century the street was called Berlinische Strasse, Berliner Strasse or Breite Strasse. It has been called Königstrasse since 1841. It was renamed several times afterwards, in 1938 to Straße der SA , in GDR times Leninstraße and from 1991 Hauptstraße.

Former church of St. George

The former church of St. George was built in 1696. Before that, there was a wooden chapel that had become dilapidated. In 1986 the church was reopened as a concert hall, before that it was long in disrepair. The organ in the concert hall dates from 1988.
