Körtingsdorf
Körtingsdorf was a workers' settlement of the Gebr. Körting company in Hanover that was built at the end of the 19th century . Today there are only two buildings left in the middle of a modern residential area in the Badenstedt district.
location
The factory settlement was close to the Körting factory site south of Badenstedter Strasse. Historically, the area belonged to Bornum . Today the former settlement area is part of the Badenstedt district.
history
The Körtingsdorf settlement was built by the name-giving company, Gebr. Körting, in a village-like manner on an open area from 1890. This took place at the same time as the company's new factory was built. Not far from the factory site, the company acquired a 33-hectare property on Badenstedter Strasse from farmers in Bornum. The settlement houses for the Körting workers were then built . They were semi-detached houses with stables and large gardens (about 800 m² each). Each semi-detached house had two spacious apartments and, in some cases, an extended attic. The company wanted to offer its employees healthy living conditions that were not available in the low-light and narrow apartments in nearby Linden . With this housing construction, the company tied a permanent workforce to the plant.
Originally around 100 semi-detached houses were planned, but only around 50 houses were actually built. There were legal disputes with the municipality of Badenstedt, which had withdrawn the building permit . She feared follow-up costs for road construction, administration, employing teachers, etc. Thereupon the company undertook to take care of administration, maintain the paths and set up a school. A school for 120 children was built next to the houses in 1893. There were also small shops and an inn in the residential area.
Today there are only two buildings left of the earlier settlement houses, which have been carefully restored. They are located in the middle of a large residential area with apartment blocks from the 1960s. Since the 2000s there has been a primary school at the location of the old school in the former Körtingsdorf, which is called the Gebrüder-Körting-Schule . It is located in the building of the Astrid Lindgren School.
