With the Køkkenmødding of Fanore near the coastal town of Fanore (English Fanore midden ) in the Burren in County Clare in Ireland , a more than 6000 year old residential area was excavated, which also provided evidence of a Bronze Age catastrophe. The Køkkenmødding (English Shell midden ) was discovered in 2008 by Elaine O'Malley.

In addition to the shell material from mussels, nudibranchs, purple snails and sea snails, there was a cooking area in which hunters and gatherers prepared the mussels. It also contained stone tools, including two axes . The hotplates from the Mesolithic were used until the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

The excavation on the beach at Trawvealacalaha about 0.5 km south of Fanore in 2009 revealed a linear black layer of organic material about 5 to 7 cm thick, which archaeologists believe could have come from a tsunami that hit the coast. The substance breaks down when it comes into contact with air.
