Abbreviation
Under breve is understood in the graphematics (also similar in typography ) the use of letters ( graphemes ) or diacritical marks that have a particular impact on the pronunciation of the preceding vowel letter or the relevant basic character (his accent is the phonological feature / + short / assigned). In German it is as a rule to the doubling of consonant letters : The double consonant letter of the previous is vowel in a word faster ( shorter pronounced) than in a word that is written only with the corresponding simple consonant letters.
- Examples: Ko ff he ku ll s, la ss s
(In the German spelling in Switzerland , however , ss is not an abbreviation; rather, instead of ß , it is used here to represent the voiceless s-sound: ss also occurs here after long vowels, e.g. greetings .)
However, not every consonant doubling is an abbreviation.
- For example, with compound nouns : Somme rr egen; Koffe rr aum
