Kızılay (Ankara)

Selânik Street in Kızılay

Kızılay is a district in the center of Ankara that is best known for its commercial and shopping centers. It is named after the Turkish Red Crescent Hospital ( Kızılay Derneği ), which is located in this district. The center is the Kızılay Meydanı ( Kızılay Square ).

There are many retail and grocery stores on the main street, Ataturk Bulvarı, as well as restaurants and bars with outdoor seating, fish markets and a large flower market.

In Kızılay there is Güven Park with lots of trees and benches, next to it a bus station. During protests in Turkey in 2013 , Kızılay Square, next to Taksim Square in Istanbul, was one of the most important meeting places .

On March 13, 2016, an attack occurred here that resulted in several deaths.
