Kōchikai (Katō faction)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kōchikai ( Japanese 宏 池 会 ) was from 2000 to 2008 the smaller of two factions of the same name within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Under the leadership of the Chairman of the Political Research Council of the LDP, Sadakazu Tanigaki , it was one of the smaller factions with around 14 members of the lower house and two upper house members . It was mostly referred to as the Tanigaki faction ( 谷 垣 派 , Tanigaki-ha ), also to avoid confusion with the Koga faction , which was also officially called Kōchikai.

The Kōchikai, founded in 1957, was one of the oldest and largest factions of the LDP (for details see Kōchikai ). In 2000 it split after faction chairman Kōichi Katō had led a failed rebellion against the party and government leaders of Yoshirō Mori . The few Katō remaining followers then formed the smaller Kōchikai as a Katō faction. In 2002 Sadatoshi Ozato took over the chairmanship, then Sadakazu Tanigaki in 2005.

In December 2007, the two Kōchikai announced their merger for spring 2008, which was completed in May 2008. Makoto Koga became chairman of the joint group .
