The Kōon-ji ( Japanese 孝 恩 寺 ) is a temple of the Jōdo direction of Buddhism in the city of Kaizuka in Osaka Prefecture .

history

The origins of the temple are unknown, but it was rebuilt from 1684 onwards. When the Kannon-ji ( 観 音 寺 ) was abandoned in 1914 , the Koōn-ji took over the Kannon Hall. The Kannon-ji was built at the request of the Emperor Shōmu in 726 under the construction management of Gyōki , and Gyōki also made the Kannon figure displayed there by hand, according to tradition.

When Hashiba Hideyoshi conquered the province of Kii , the temple was destroyed except for the Kannon Hall. In the Edo period , the lords of Kishiwada , the Okabe , took care of the temple, but in 1889 it was abandoned. Medieval bricks, floor slabs, clay vessels and other items were later excavated.

The attachment

The Kanon-do measures 5 × 5 Ken . With 12.72 × 12.72 m here, this results in an exactly square floor plan. The pyramid roof is covered with tiles. The hall dates from the Kamakura period and is registered as a national treasure. Since no ( , nashi ) nails ( , kugi ) were used in the construction, the building is also called “Hall without nails” ( 釘 無 堂 , Kuginashi-dō ).

Treasures of the temple

Numerous figures from the Buddhist world of faith are venerated in the interior of the hall. The main cult figure is a seated Amida Nyorai made of wood. There are also 19 figures , starting with the eleven-headed Kannon ( 十 一面 観 音 ), all of which are registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan . They date from the middle to late Heian period . There is also a picture of saints from the Heian period painted with paint on a wooden board, which is also registered as an important cultural asset.

On the temple grounds are a five-story stone pagoda (an important cultural asset of the prefecture) from 1348 and pagodas and stone steles from the Tenshō period (1573–1593).
