The Sagarika ( Sanskrit : सागरिका , Sāgarikā Oceanic ) is a submarine-based medium-range missile that was developed by India since 1991 as a second strike capacity .

The Sagarika K-15 was designed in Hyderabad by the DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) . The development goes back to 1991. The project was first published seven years later under the then Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes. The first missiles were delivered to the Indian naval forces in 2001. On February 26, 2008, the missile was first tested in the Bay of Bengal . Five more tests followed, including three full-range tests, all of which were successful. On November 12th, 2008, a silo supported version was developed and tested, called Shaurya. The Sagarika missile is intended to India's first nuclear submarine INS Arihant the Arihant class are mounted, which was launched on July 26 in 2009. Each submarine should be able to transport up to 12 of these missiles.
