Views of the beer wagon according to sheet 417 (253)

The Bavarian beer wagon is a two-axle refrigerator wagon according to sample sheet 417 for the Bavarian State Railways in accordance with Car inventory from 1913. The cars were used both as leased railroad cars and as private cars.

Constructive features

Underframe

The frame: the car was already built completely from profile iron and riveted. The outer side rails were U-shaped with outward flanges. The cross members were also made of U-profiles and not cranked. The wagons had screw couplings with safety bars as a towing device. The drawbar was spring-loaded throughout and in the middle. The wagons had double-slotted basket buffers with an installation length of 612 mm. The buffer plates had a diameter of 370 mm.

The underframe was designed on one side to the brake platform.

drive

The wagons had half-timbered axle holders forged from flat iron. The axles were stored in sliding axle bearings. The wheels had spoked wheel bodies and a wheel diameter of 1014 mm. Two different wheel shapes were used: Type 24 wheels with eight suspension springs 1135 mm long and measuring 96 × 13 mm, and Type 39 wheels with ten suspension springs measuring 1000 mm in length and 90 × 13 mm. The short suspension springs were intended for wagons with a load weight of 15.0 t.

The wheels were braked on both sides, the brake linkage had central lever in the Bavarian design.

Car body

In detail, the design of the cars was quite different. In all of them, the frame of the car body consisted of an iron framework made of U and L profiles. It was visible on the outside. The double-shell wagon wall with a total thickness of 95 mm was clad on the outside with horizontal tongue and groove boards. The gaps were filled with insulation material. Chopped straw as well as cork or similar materials were used for this.

The loading openings on both sides had a clear width of 1,000 mm for single-leaf doors and up to 1,650 mm for double-leaf doors. The clear height was 1,930 mm.

The car body was shortened on one side. The brake platform was located there. The roof was continuous up to the end of the 525 mm wide platform so that it was covered. The roof was supported by two side supports.

Heating / cooling

Some of the cars had gas heaters based on the Wobbe system. For cooling purposes, the wagons had two ice bins, each with a capacity of 1.3 to 2.0 m³, which were attached transversely under the ceiling at the ends of the wagons. The ice containers were filled through openings on the roof.

Private car

These cars were operated in the name and on behalf of the specified breweries and were only used by the state railways. The technical equipment was also prescribed by them and checked as part of an acceptance test.
