The K4 climbing rock is a public sport climbing facility built from recycled prefabricated buildings in the Grünau district of Leipzig . On the approximately 21 meter high K4 operated by the Leipzig Alpine Club, over 30 climbing routes of various difficulty levels are possible with a climbing area of around 600 m² .

history

The Grünau district is a prefabricated housing estate in the west of Leipzig. In order to counteract the massive decline in population in the 1990s, numerous redesign and modernization measures were carried out by the owners (especially housing associations ) to improve the quality of life . In the course of the urban redevelopment east , the WOGETRA as owner, in cooperation with the city of Leipzig and the Leipzig section of the German Alpine Club as operator, launched the K4 project for creative urban renewal .

From March to July 2000, the artificial climbing rock was built on the sports field Stuttgarter Allee behind the indoor swimming pool “Grünauer Welle” for a construction cost of around DM 650,000. The dismantled balcony parapets of an 11-storey prefabricated building from Stuttgarter Allee and demolition slabs from a 16-storey high-rise building from Garskestrasse were used. The recycled panels were clad with shotcrete .

The K4 was officially opened on August 17, 2001.

From September 2007 to March 2012, Xadventure Outdoorservice GmbH took over the operation of the facility, and since then it has been run again by the Leipzig Alpine Club.

construction

In order to achieve sufficient stability, a Y was chosen as the base area. The north-northeast branch reaches the full height of 21 meters. The southeast branch reaches a height of 15 m and at the end has a 5 m high buttress. The west-southwest branch of the K4 was designed as a wide pillar. At a height of about 8 m there is a platform that can be used as an intermediate stop for the ascent to the top.

Corresponding colors and structures such as cracks and heels were modeled for a natural view of the climbing rock.

There are routes of difficulty levels III to IX ( UIAA scale ) to be found.

The K4 is equipped with a summit cross and, in accordance with Saxon tradition, has a summit book .

Bouldering

The K4 is also suitable for bouldering . At a height of around 3 m there is a marking all around, up to which bouldering is allowed. In addition, there is a 2.50 m high boulder wall at the northern boundary of the facility.

use

The system is fenced in to protect against unauthorized use and vandalism, but access to the system is possible all year round. An access card is required, which is sold by the Alpine Club. With access to the facility, you accept the terms of use. The system can be used in rain-free and ice-free weather at temperatures above 0 ° C.
