Lists on the subject

The KS-172 AAM-L is a BVR - air-to-air guided missile for long combat ranges from Russian production. The GRAU index is R-72 . Another name was K-100 .

development

The KS-172 was developed by Nowator in the late 1980s . The guided missile was first presented in 1993 at the air show in Abu Dhabi . As a result of the problematic financial situation at the manufacturer Nowator, the KS-172 could not be finally developed. A planned series production for the Russian air force did not materialize either. After unsuccessful export efforts, the project was discontinued in the early 2000s.

technology

The KS-172 was designed to combat distant surveillance aircraft ( AWACS ). It is also intended for the fight against bombers and jammers and tankers . During the cruise flight, the emergency aircraft can supply the missile with updated target data. The on-board active radar seeker is switched on for the final approach to the target. In order to achieve a long range, the guided missile is fired on a ballistic trajectory. The guided weapon hits the target from a very elevated position. The guided missile can be used day and night and in all weather conditions. Targets that use electronic jammers can also be combated .
