Permuted register

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A permuted (alphabetical) Register , permuted directory or chain register is a special form of a register in which all phrases (titles such as book titles and headers or subject strings ) several times as permuted lists that each another keyword as highlighted registry entry appears. The registers are usually created fully automatically, with a distinction being made between KWIC ( keyword in context ) and KWOC ( keyword out of context ) as the usual forms of presentation .

KWIC index

The abbreviation KWIC stands for K ey w ord I n C ontext (keyword in context). In the index of the same name, the keyword within the phrase is highlighted. This can be done, for example, by centering the keywords or by using bold type.

function

The KWIC index is created by sorting the words in a text alphabetically . It should be noted that the surrounding context information (i.e. the surrounding words) is included in the index as far as possible. The sorted words are each in bold in the middle of a line, left and right are then a few words from the surrounding context in normal font. This makes it easier to identify the context of the word you are looking for.

In order not to overload a KWIC index with a long list of frequent, but not meaningful words (e.g. in , is , and ), you can specify the stop words at KWIC that should not be included in the index.

use

In the pre-computerized world, KWIC was a common and useful indexing method . KWIC was used for indexing titles in libraries, as the user then received additional information from the title when searching for a keyword; In this function, however, KWIC has been replaced by computerized full-text search.

In addition, KWIC can be used to create concordances such as those used in B. are needed by humanities scholars (such as philologists or historians ) for the precise analysis of texts.
