KXJB TV mast

The KXJB TV mast is a transmission mast for a television station in North Dakota and at 627.89 meters (2060 feet) it is currently the fifth tallest structure on earth , only one meter (three feet) lower than 8 kilometers removed KVLY mast . Located six kilometers northeast of Galesburg, North Dakota, at 47 ° 16 ′ 45 ″  N , 97 ° 20 ′ 27 ″  W , it was completed in 1966, around the station's former transmission mast, a 330.7 meter high tower, 15 miles northeast from Valley City, North Dakota, which was sold to FM station KOVC .

The tower collapsed twice and was rebuilt each time. The sixth tallest structure on earth is the KXTV / KVOR transmission tower near Sacramento, California.

First collapse

The first collapse happened on February 14, 1968 at 9:08 p.m. when the rotor of a naval helicopter cut some guy ropes (in this accident the four-man crew of the helicopter was killed). The television station was then out of service for eight days before it went back into service from its previous location, the KOVC mast. A replacement mast of the same height was erected in four and a half months.

Second collapse

In an ice storm on April 6, 1997 with gusts of wind of up to 110 kilometers per hour, which led to ice deposits more than 10 centimeters thick, the mast collapsed again at 6:09 p.m. The cable television program was resumed at 8:34 p.m. and the broadcasting service of the television station could also be resumed the next day at 3 p.m. by renting replacement transmitters on other masts at short notice.

In the immediate vicinity of the collapsed mast, a 224 meter high auxiliary mast was erected, which enabled broadcasting again from July 10, 1997. He's wearing some directional antennas today .

On April 1, 1998, the reconstruction of the collapsed mast began at the same height, but in a more stable design. This mast was completed on July 30, 1998. For the inauguration, some members of the construction team put a 1.22 meter high flagpole on top, which made the mast 30 centimeters higher than the KVLY mast and - up to its removal - the tallest structure in the world. The transmission on channel 4 was transferred to the new mast on August 15, 1998.

The antenna transmits with 97.7 k W for the CBS offshoot KXJB-TV from Valley City. The station and mast belong to the Catamount Broadcasting of Fargo .
