Kaštiliaš
Kaštiliaš or Kaštiliašu is a Kassite male name.
Cassite rulers
He was the name of several Middle Eastern rulers:
- Kaštiliaš I.
- Kaštiliaš II.
- Kaštiliaš III. which is only indirectly developed
- Kaštiliaš IV.
- Kaštiliaš from Ḫana , who is sometimes equated with Kaštiliaš I.
Landsberger sees Agum, like Kaštiliaš / Kaštil-ašu, as "lead names", pairs of names that are passed on from grandfather to first-born grandson (papponymy) and lists Artatama - Šuttarna ( Mitanni ) and Tudḫaliya -Arnuwanda ( Hittites ). It certainly appears to be a dynastic name.
More name bearers
A letter from the 15th year of Ammi-ṣaduqa's reign mentions a certain Kaštil, son of Bēl-šunu, who, together with another man , commanded a troop of 1,500 Samharī . Perhaps this is short for Kaštiliaš. Then the person in question could be a Kassitian tribal leader who perhaps belonged to the later royal family.
