Kaffenstein

The Kaffenstein is a Loogfels - a rock on which special notches were made to mark a boundary. It is located in the Palatinate Forest on the boundary of the small town of Deidesheim and is classified as a cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

The Kaffenstein is a three-mark Loogfels; it marks the southeastern border of the Deidesheim city forest to the Gimmeldinger and Königsbacher forest and lies northeast of the Benjental , through which the Mußbach flows, and south of the Stabenberg .

The rock was first mentioned in 1534. The name Kaffenstein comes from "Kaften" / "Kerfen" - notches . The characters depicted on it are as follows:

  • the simple cross stands for Deidesheim,
  • the cross adorned with deer antlers stands for Königsbach, which formerly belonged to the Lords of Hirschhorn ,
  • the diamond sign stands for the Electoral Palatinate .
  • Letters: The "G" stands for Gimmeldingen, the "K" for Königsbach and the "a" is a numbering letter.

In addition to these signs, the years 1694, 1705, 1714, 1769, 1776, 1779, 1818 and 1826 are also embedded on the rock. These were left on the rock during border inspections. In earlier years, when there were no plans for the course of the district boundaries, such border inspections were customary every seven years in order to internalize their course and the signs to mark them anew; in later times, when such plans existed, there were still border inspections, but then more people were there and had the character of a festival.
