Kahchun Wong

Kahchun Wong (also: Kah Chun Wong) (born June 24, 1986 ) is a Singaporean conductor .

On May 12, 2016, Wong was the first Asian to win the prestigious first prize of the “ Mahler Competition ”, a conducting competition that has been held every three years by the Bamberg Symphony since 2004 .

Life

Wong studied composition at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.) Degree . After completing his bachelor's degree, he was accepted at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin to continue his studies in Christian Ehwald's “conducting class” .

In 2014 Wong founded the Asian Contemporary Ensemble in Singapore, which represents the diversity of Singapore through the amalgamation of typical instruments from Chinese, Malaysian, Indian and western cultures.

He made his debut on March 6, 2015 as a conductor with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra .

In 2017 Wong was nominated for the Singapore Youth Award .

On August 4, 2018, Wong made his debut as chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra with the “My Playlist” program as part of the Klassik Open Air in Nuremberg . He was announced the previous year as the successor to Alexander Shelley as chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra.

In December 2019, Federal President Steinmeier awarded Kahchun Wong the Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his outstanding commitment to Singaporean-German cultural relations and the promotion of German musical culture abroad. Wong was the youngest Singaporean and the first Singapore artist to receive this award.
