Kai Nagel (born September 17, 1965 in Cologne ) is a German theoretical physicist and university lecturer in the field of traffic system planning and traffic telematics .

Life

Kai Nagel studied physics and meteorology at the University of Cologne and at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris. In 1991 he became a research associate of Achim Bachem at the Center for Parallel Computing in Cologne, 1993/1994 research stays at the Los Alamos National Laboratory , the Santa Fe Institute and the Brookhaven National Laboratory . In 1992, together with Michael Schreckenberg, he published the so-called Nagel-Schreckenberg model for simulating road traffic. In 1994 he received his doctorate in computer science . From 1995 to 1999 he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, in the last position as “Research Team Leader”, where he further developed the Nagel-Schreckenberg model for parallel computers in the USA and marketed it under the name “Transims”. From 1999 to 2004 he was assistant professor in computer science at the ETH Zurich at the Institute for Scientific Computing. Since 2004 he has been professor for traffic system planning and traffic telematics at the TU Berlin . Kai Nagel is one of the developers of the open source program MATSim ( Multi Agent Transport Simulation ).
