Michael Schreckenberg (physicist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Schreckenberg (born September 28, 1956 in Düsseldorf ) is a German theoretical physicist and professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen . He is mainly active in the field of the physics of transportation and traffic.

Live and act

Michael Schreckenberg studied theoretical physics at the University of Cologne . With a dissertation on spin glasses and diffusion , he received his doctorate there in 1985 under Johannes Zittartz in statistical physics . In 1992, together with Kai Nagel, he published what is now known as the Nagel-Schreckenberg model of motorway traffic. In 1994 he moved to the University of Duisburg-Essen , where he became professor for physics of transport and traffic in 1997. There he is also a member of the Center for Logistics & Transport.

Since the mid-1990s, he has been involved with the modeling , simulation and optimization of transport systems in large networks, especially road traffic, and the influence of human behavior on them. Schreckenberg's activities include online traffic forecasts for the motorway network in North Rhine-Westphalia ( OLSIM and Ruhrpilot ), together with Nobel Prize winner Reinhard Selten, the reaction of motorists to traffic information , and research into the dynamics of crowds. In the latter work, he examined safety-relevant aspects of football stadiums, city centers and ferries from the passenger shipping sector and then developed simulation-based escape plans. His traffic models allow, among other things, predictions about the shift of traffic flows when setting up traffic-relevant construction sites.

According to his own statement, Schreckenberg had been consulted "on request about individual aspects" about the accident at the 2010 Love Parade in Duisburg.

In 2011, Schreckenberg was accepted into the European Academy of Sciences and Arts for his research achievements in the field of theoretical physics, and in 2018 into the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

Michael Schreckenberg is the son of the German historian and educator Wilhelm Schreckenberg . He is married, has three children and lives in Duisburg .
