The Ruhrpilot is a traffic management system in the Ruhr area .

The task of the Ruhrpilot is to support the various road construction authorities in controlling and directing traffic as well as in the operational tasks of the transport companies.

For traffic control data of motorways , national roads , regional roads and local main roads used, some data in addition to flow through construction sites , traffic incidents , events , public transport and the availability of parking spaces in the system.

In addition to providing data, cross-mode strategy management in particular serves to better utilize road and rail capacity. With the intermodal router, the Ruhrpilot also makes a contribution to better linking the various modes of transport. The user can also use the website to compare public and private transport.

In the course of the construction of the Ruhrpilot, a center was built at a cost of around 9 million euros, which primarily functions as a Ruhr area-wide hub for all traffic-related information. Here, the previously collected data is processed and passed on to the cooperation partners as required. Thanks to this central data and service provider, the inter-municipal exchange of data and information between the municipalities / transport companies in the Ruhr area is made possible for the first time.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia also supported the modernization of the traffic computer systems in the municipalities and the expansion of the systems in the transport companies with around 20 million euros.

The system has been operated since January 1, 2010 by the state-owned Ruhrpilotbesitzgesellschaft mbH in cooperation with municipalities and transport companies in the Ruhr area.

Cooperation partner

Ruhrpilot is a cooperation project funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia between a total of ten independent cities, two districts, eight district-related cities and six transport companies in the Ruhr area as well as the Rhine-Ruhr transport association and the North Rhine-Westphalia road construction company . In addition, Ruhrpilot cooperates with mobil-im-rheinland , a mobility initiative for the entire Cologne / Bonn area.
