Achim Bachem

Achim Bachem (born March 17, 1947 in Beuel near Bonn ) is a German mathematician , computer scientist and science organizer.

Career

Bachem studied mathematics and physics from 1969 to 1973 at the University of Cologne and the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1976 under Bernhard Korte ( contributions to the theory of the corner polyhedra ) and in 1980 did his habilitation in Operations Research . From 1980 to 1982 he was Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and 1982/83 Professor of Operations Research in Bonn. From 1983 to 1996 he was Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cologne and Director of the Institute for Mathematics and, since 1988, of the Institute for Computer Science. From 1989 to 1991 he was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

In 1993 he co-founded the Center for Parallel Computing (ZPR) and was its chairman from 1993 to 1996. From 2006 to 2014 he was a board member of Forschungszentrum Jülich and a board member of the Gauss Center for Supercomputing . He is also chairman of the Association of European Supercomputing Centers (PRACE). Since October 23, 2007 he has been awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

From 1996 to 2006 he was on the board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and from 1998 to 2002 German delegate to the European Space Agency (ESA).

He is the Vice President of the Helmholtz Society . He is on the supervisory board of Wincor Nixdorf AG and Pironet NDH AG, on the advisory board of NRW Bank , member of the German Bio-Economy Council , board of directors of the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf and chairman of the university council of the FH Aachen .

He is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering ( acatech ), the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the Academy of Geosciences in Hanover.

He is married and has two children.
