Kaigetsudō Ando ( Japanese 懐 月 堂 安 度 , also Kan'unshi ( 翰 運 子 ); active at the beginning of the 18th century) was a Japanese Ukiyo-e artist who is best known for his painted depictions of women.

life and work

As an art dealer, Ando used the name Dewaya Genshichi ( 出 羽 屋 源 七 ). He lived in Suwa-chō in the Asakusa area in Edo . In contrast to most Ukiyoe artists, no woodcuts by him were known until a few years ago, he concentrated on original paintings of beautiful women in splendid robes and became known all over Edo. The so-called Kaigetsudō beauties, which Ando and his students produced in his studio, are single, rather plump women in a conventional pose. The strong lines and the use of light primary colors convey a sense of boldness and clarity.

These somewhat schematic works of the Kaigetsudō school followed the strong demand for painted ukiyo-e. In 1714 Ando was involved in the Ejima affair - it was about the lady-in-waiting Ejima and the kabuki actor Ikushima - and was then sent into exile on the Izu island of Ōshima . He was then pardoned and was able to return to Edo . It looks like Ando painted his best pictures before this affair and the exile that followed.

Ando's best-known images include “Standing Beauty, Combing” ( 髪 を な お す 立 美人 , Kami o naosu tachi-bijin ), and “Courtesan with a girl” ( 遊 女 と 禿 図 , Yūjo to kamuro zu ).
