biography

Career start in Finland (1989-2000)

Salonen began playing football in 1989 in the youth of his home club Turku PS . In 1996 he rose to the first team after two championships in the U20 area and made his professional debut on May 5, 1996 against Finnairin Palloilijat Helsinki . In the same year, his team reached the cup final, but there was defeated by the HJK Helsinki (3: 4 nE). For a year he played at Hangö IK in the second Finnish league, where his club only finished eighth after a successful pre-season. Salonen scored four goals in thirteen games. There followed more seasons back at Turku PS, for which he comes to a total of 54 games (three goals) in the Veikkausliiga . He also played eight games (four goals) at the lower class Åbo IFK , a club also based in Turku, which at the time was the reserve team of Turku PS.

Moved to Germany (2000-2008)

In 2000 Salonen finally went to Germany. His first competitive game for a German club was for the then third-class SV Elversberg on November 25, 2000, when he was substituted on after his team lost 5-0 at Carl Zeiss Jena around half an hour before the end of the game. In his eight substitutions, Salonen remained goalless and he moved to the Oberliga Südwest at Eintracht Bad Kreuznach . There he was the second top scorer in the league with 21 goals in 32 missions. As a result, he was committed to the then top division club FSV Frankfurt , whose permanent staff in 2003/04 and 2004/05 included 55 games (17 goals). After mixed engagements with the southern regional league team 1. SC Feucht (23 games, five goals) and the northern regional league team Chemnitzer FC (22 games, 2 goals) in the following years, the 2006/07 season saw the move to the Lower Rhine to the upper division KFC Uerdingen 05 . There he became the second Finn in the club's history 26 years after Seppo Pyykkö .

After a successful start with five goals in the first seven games, Salonen lost his ring finger in a training accident when he tried to jump over a barrier gate and got stuck on an obstacle because of his wedding ring. In the end, Salonen played 59 times in the Oberliga Niederrhein (14 goals) for Uerdingen, while the trained center forward was temporarily used as a midfielder under coach Aleksandar Ristić in the 2007/08 season. On the 31st matchday of the same season, Salonen tore his cruciate ligament at home against the second team of 1. FC Köln and he ended his active football career. Uerdingen rose to the sixth class association league.

After professional career (2009-present)

Immediately after the end of his career, Salonen took over the coaching post of the second team of the KFC Uerdingen 05, his last club as a player, in the district league for the 2008/09 season. In 2011 Salonen then moved from Krefeld to Canada , his wife's country of birth , and the crowd's favorite was bid farewell to the fans at a KFC home game. Salonen currently works as a trainer in a soccer school in Canada and trains youth teams, although there are still contacts to Krefeld.
