List of apple varieties |
Kaiser Alexander is an old apple variety from Russia. The autumn apple is one of the rambour or pound apples. It is named after Tsar Alexander I.
Variety characteristics
The Kaiser Alexander apple reaches a considerable size. The skin is streaked and painted crimson red over the whole fruit so that the basic color hardly shines through. Its meat is beautifully white, fluffy, juicy and has a pleasantly spicy, finely raspberry-like, wine-rich sugar taste. Edible from November to February.
Mecklenburg's first pomologist Franz Hermann Müschen describes it like this and also provides an indication of the probable age of the variety: “ A splendor = apple of admired size and beauty, which was introduced from Kurland to England and Germany eight years ago . The sample crops sent from Riga to England in 1817 were five and a half inches wide and nearly five inches high. "
