Imperial Arsenal (Vienna)

During the 16th century, the term Imperial Arsenal was mainly used in Vienna to refer to shipyards that built warships for the Danube .

The oldest imperial arsenal was built around 1500 to 1529 in Unteren Werd near today's Urania in Vienna's 2nd district .
  • Second Imperial Arsenal
The 2nd Imperial Arsenal was built in 1546 in Obere Werd near today's Salztorbrücke . In 1561 it was given to the City of Vienna. This redesigned it to a ship mooring.
  • Third Imperial Arsenal
The 3rd Imperial Arsenal was built between 1558 and 1561 at the same time as the Elendbastei and the Neutor. It was closed in 1768, after which the building was used for military catering. The canal and jetties were leveled and houses built on them. In 1873–1875 these houses were demolished and the plots re-parceled out.
