Kaiserslautern model

Bach Railway

The Kaiserslautern model is an unrealized tram-train project. It is a further development of the Karlsruhe model for the city of Kaiserslautern and its surrounding area, but combines it with the Zwickau model .

However, the Kaiserslautern model never went beyond a planning phase. The aim of the model was to connect the Lautertalbahn with the Kaiserslautern city center via a tram-like inner-city route. Regional light rail trains should run from the town hall or the main train station via this inner-city route to the Lautertalbahn and via this to Lampertsmühle-Otterbach . From Lampertsmühle-Otterbach, the trains should run on the Bachbahn as trams to EBO or on to Lauterecken as regional light rail vehicles. In addition, a classic regional train connection should run. The vehicles should be modernized to such an extent that the system change takes place automatically without the driver's influence . A connection to the Kaiserslautern – Enkenbach railway line was also planned via the north station .

Part of the project was also the better combination of bus and train, especially on the inner city route, which was to be partly used jointly by both modes of transport without having to carry out a complete asphalting. The concept of the Mannheim vehicle role was used for this. In the end, however, the project failed because of the costs. In fact, such a system would be interesting for the Kaiserslautern region, as there are high commuter traffic due to the large number of students.
