History and culture

The existence of the place can be proven by documents since the year 1150, when the name Basocha was first mentioned. In the course of the French Revolution , it was given its current name in 1790, with the addition of sous-Lucé referring to the actually smaller neighboring town. As a village that has historically always been dependent on agriculture, La Baroche has partially preserved this tradition and still has a large number of agricultural businesses, including a horse stud.

A testimony to the early days of the village is a tree-covered hill that once served as a base for the lords of the village. Probably in the 10th or 11th century there was a simple castle made of wood on it, but it has completely disappeared. What has been preserved, however, is a granite cross at the foot of the mountain, some of which still consists of its original elements from the 16th century. The historical heritage also includes an old mill in the hamlet of Cutesson and a lavoir at the entrance to the village. This building, which was restored to its present form through renovation work in March 1889, remained in use into the 21st century. The same applies to the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption village church , which was built between 1892 and 1894. Their most important artifact, a sculpture of Saint Martin sharing his cloak, is much older . This depiction from the 14th century was classified as a Monument historique as early as 1958 . The building has a bell tower that is located directly above the church entrance.

During the French Revolution, the population was 1602 in 1793. Then there were fluctuations and from the late 19th century onwards a clear downward trend became noticeable, so that in 1911 fewer than 1000 residents were recorded for the first time. This development continued until 1975 only 504 people were registered in the municipality. The population situation was able to stabilize for a few years before another significant decline occurred in the 1990s.
